House fire in Bonnyville deemed ‘suspicious’

Early Tuesday morning, Station 5 Bonnyville responded to a house fire. The tenant was not injured, but two cats were reported to have perished in the incident.

BONNYVILLE – In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Station 5 Bonnyville fire crew responded to a structure fire in the area of 52 Ave. and 52 St.

Dispatching at 1 a.m., crews arrived at a residence where smoke was showing from the building's roof vents and doors, according to Dan Heney, the fire chief for the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority.

“The fire was quickly brought under control and crews worked to minimize smoke damage to the home,” wrote Heney in a statement.

At the time of the fire, the tenant of the home was at the residence but did not sustain injuries, however, two cats perished, according to the fire chief.

“At this point the fire is being deemed suspicious and the RCMP are now leading the investigation,” Heney told Lakeland Today, Thursday morning.

“We know the point of origin of the fire was on the landing of the staircase to the basement, but the cause is still under investigation.”

As more information is made available on the incident, Lakeland Today will provide updates.
