JAWS student is Junior Citizen of the Year

Lyric Jesso will be in the spotlight at tonight's Lac La Biche Light UP the Night on December 1

LAC LA BICHE - Lyric Jesso is Lac La Biche County’s 2023 Junior Citizen of the Year. The J.A. Williams (JAWS) student will be participating in the Light Up the Night Parade this Friday night, arriving alongside Santa in the decorated Coca-Cola semi-truck. Jesso will also be flicking the switch to turn on the lights at the big Christmas tree on Main Street.

Jesso was selected from several young candidates whose nominations were sent to the organizing committee for the Light Up the Night event.

Some of those who nominated Jesso for the award included teachers at JAWS. Wade Coutney commended Jesso not only for his dedication to his studies, but also for his leadership abilities.

“His infectious energy has made him a leader among his peers, inspiring others to get involved and make a difference,” Coutney stated. “Whether it is in academic pursuits or extracurricular activities, Lyric approaches each endeavour with enthusiasm and dedication.”

Danika White, a science teacher at JAWS also wrote a nomination for Jesso. She noted the youth’s various volunteer roles both at school and in the community. These include working with restorative justice through the Metis Nation of Alberta and being an active member of the school’s Rotary Interact Club and the Student Advisory Committee.

“He has volunteered as a ref for numerous sporting events, and he has assisted in Remembrance Day ceremonies and any other role he has been asked of by various staff members,” White said.

Friday night's Light Up the Night event begins with a downtown parade starting at 6:30 pm. The switch will flick to light up the giant holiday tree at the end of the parade. Downtown businesses will be open late during the event, with hot chocolate and other refreshments served up by several local groups during the night. Santa will also be meeting families along the parade route.
