ST. PAUL - The NEAJBHL season may not have had the ending anyone anticipated, but the St. Paul Jr. B Canadiens have named a number of individual award winners for the 2019/20 season.

"Honestly, it was very difficult to pick individual awards as every single player on this team contributed tremendously to our success," said Shawn Germain, who was in his first season as head coach of the team for the 2019/20 season.

The team's Most Valuable Players was none other than the team's captain. "Brayden played huge minutes for us, in every situation, contributed offensively . . . and showed tremendous leadership as our captain."

The team's Top Scorer was Lane Wycotte. "Lane is one of those guys that shows up on the score sheet every night. He shows up every day for practice ready to compete and I thought he was rewarded for that this season. He was great for us this year," said Germain.

Goalies Brad Mistol and Hayden Lyons were named the team's Playoff MVPs. "Both of these guys were spectacular for us in the post season and backstopped us to a finals birth. We knew each and every night that regardless of who we put in net that they were going to compete very hard and give us a chance to win."

The Best Defenceman award went to Nathan Degraves and Zandro Luck-Palliotto. "Again, tough to pick just one," said Germain. "These two guys were so important for us and the funny thing is they are complete opposites as players. Nathan gave us an offensive threat from the backend and became very reliable defensively, and Zandro was our steady eddy back there that has amazing defensive instincts and just keeps pucks out of our net."

The Heart Award went to local boys, Orrie Wood and Brendan Levasseur.

"These two gentlemen set the tone for us every night. Always physical, got in on the forecheck and really sparked our energy levels when we needed it. They were our heartbeat," said the coach.

The Unsung Hero title was given to Kurtis Labant.

"The second Kurt walked into our dressing room at the start of the year, the season swung in our favour. Great player, great teammate, big and strong, He’s really a star at this level. Had he not gotten hurt mid-season he may have split the MVP award with Goulet he was that good. That’s why he’s our unsung hero."

Most Dedicated Award went to Dylan Lindal.

"Dylan is just one of those kids you don’t ever have to worry about being ready. We asked him to play defence for us this year because he’s such a phenomenal skater and he never bat an eye at it. It was best for the team and that’s all Lindy ever wants…. What’s best for the team. He’s never seen a corner he didn’t like, very physical. He’s your prototypical (Saskatchewan) boy."

Most Improved over the course of the season was Teagan Densmore.

"This one was not even close. At the start of the year Teagan was in and out of the lineup. By the end of it he was playing big, hard, heavy minutes for us on the backend. The kid comes to work every day with a great attitude. (He) wants to get better daily. (He) ended up being very steady for us back there," said Germain.

Rookie of the Year was 16-year-old Nathan Degraves. He finished the season second in the league for scoring out of all defencemen.

Best Defensive Forward was Darwin Morin. "We got Darwin about mid-way through the season and we’re very lucky we did. He’s extremely reliable defensively, good on face offs, great skater, gets in on the forecheck, disrupts a lot of plays with his stick. Just an all around great player that was huge for us in the playoffs."
