LAKELAND - The Government of Alberta released a list of evacuation centres for residents who are travelling south, following the evacuation of several communities in the Northwest Territories due to wildfires. The community of Lac La Biche is included in the list for those coming from Yellowknife.

Over the next few days, evacuees are expected to arrive in Lac La Biche.

According to information from the Government of Alberta, Parkland Motels II, 10710 101 Ave, Lac la Biche, is the site of the registration centre.

"Yellowknife evacuees travelling by road should arrange for their own accommodations if possible," according to the Government of Alberta website. "Residents who are not under an active evacuation order and leave the Northwest Territories will need to use their own resources to secure accommodation, meals and other needs."

Residents under mandatory evacuation orders can also camp for free in Alberta Park.

Yellowknife evacuees travelling by road who require supports and accommodations in Alberta can receive supports in Valleyview, Fox Creek, Red Deer, and Lac La Biche.

"No government supports will be available to Yellowknife evacuees outside these locations."

Other host communities are being identified and more information is expected.

"Yellowknife evacuees travelling by air to Alberta will be directed to the City of Calgary," according to the Government of Alberta.

The City of Yellowknife began evacuating residents on the evening of Aug. 16 due to encroaching wildfires. The situation continues to change rapidly, according to reports.

South Slave evacuees

South Slave evacuees from Hay River, Enterprise, Fort Smith, and K'atl'odeeche First Nation, who are evacuating by road to Alberta should proceed to the City of Leduc if they require evacuation supports. Yellowknife evacuees should not attend Leduc, according to the Government of Alberta.

St. Albert and Grande Prairie are now at capacity, and no new evacuees will be accepted at these locations. Evacuees who are currently receiving supports in either of these communities will continue to receive needed supports.

"South Slave evacuees who evacuated by air to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will continue to receive supports in Fort McMurray."

South Slave evacuees (Hay River) who need to evacuate by air on Aug. 17 will be flown to and accommodated in Lloydminister.
