Lac La Biche Rotary raises new 'rent-a-flag' fundraiser

More flags will be waving for Remembrance Day because of Rotary fundraiser

LAC LA BICHE - Residents who like to 'show the flag' in their yard for annual events like Canada Day or Remembrance Day have been getting some 'maple re-leaf' over the last year thanks to a project raised by the local Rotary Club.

Lac La Biche Rotary Club members took on the new fundraising idea earlier this year that sees flags and a small flagpole delivered to residents who subscribe to the annual program. For $60, a subscriber will be delivered a Canadian flag and an 8-foot flag-stand for their yard. The deliveries are made a week before the designated 'flag-waving' holiday and collected seven days later.

The suggested flag events this year are Canada Day, Labour Day and Nov. 11.

Lac La Biche Rotarian Noreen Hodgins says the fundraiser took off in its first year.

"We bought 50 flags and poles and we sold them all this year," she said, adding that more flags will likely be purchased for next year's subscription period. "I think we're getting 20 more because people have been asking about them."

She's looking forward to seeing the flags waving for this year's Remembrance Day.

The next round of subscription registrations will likely begin in the new year.

"It's popular, so get the order in," says Hodgins, who enjoys seeing the red and white signs of patriotism waving in the community. "It's just nice to see."

Details about the flag program can be found on the local Rotary Club's social media pages.
