ST. PAUL - The men’s and ladies’ combined bonspiel took place Jan. 17 and 18 at the St. Paul Curling Rink.

The first draw began Friday evening and went onto Saturday with finals taking place on Saturday evening. A total of eight men’s teams and seven women’s teams competed in the bonspiel, according to icemaker Tyson Wagner, who also participated in the tournament.

“We have a little bit of everybody,” Wagner said. “We have local teams and teams from Sherwood Park, Mallaig, and Bonnyville.”

Teams were made up of regular teams, and some throw-together teams, he said. The tournament takes place every year with a mixed bonspiel also taking place in March.

About 50 curlers took part, many bringing their families out to watch them play.

AJ Jean, a St. Paul Curling Club board member, and past-president has been curling for 20 years. Jean, who played with his brothers and brother-in-law, made it to the A-Finals, after winning all their games.

“I love watching the game on TV, and I like getting out and doing it myself,” Jean said. “It’s a good way to stay active and it’s a fun sport.”

Val Kachmarchyk, of St. Lina, is a Phys. Ed. major and has curled since she was eight years old. She enjoys playing the sport throughout the winter months. Kachmarchyk and her team made it to the women’s A-Finals.

“We wanted to get together and have fun,” Kachmarchyk said. “We haven’t seen each other in a long time and we always played together.”
