LAKELAND – A partnership between Lakeland Catholic School Division (LCSD) and Portage College, along with a funding injection from the provincial government, has created an opportunity for some Lakeland high school students to learn Cree and get credits for it.

“After securing $50,000 in provincial government funding, Lakeland Catholic will be offering a Dual-Credit Cree 101 course at four of our schools,” LCSD Superintendent Pamela Guilbault told Lakeland This Week.

The four high schools included in the dual-credit program include Light of Christ School in Lac La Biche, École Notre Dame High School in Bonnyville, Holy Family Catholic School in Waskatenau, and Assumption Jr/Sr High School in Cold Lake.

The Cree 101 course will be offered virtually in the evening through a partnership with Portage College.

Students who have completed a 20 level English Language Arts course will be able to register for Cree 101 starting in the second semester of the 2022-23 school year.

“Students will receive five high school credits for completing the course, as well as three post-secondary credits,” explained Guilbault.

“The aim of the course is to prepare students to continue their studies in Cree at a post-secondary level.”

The funds to run the dual-credit language program are being provided to LCSD through the Alberta Dual Credit Start-Up Fund for Schools program.
