Lakeland residents get taste of winter driving conditions Wednesday morning

Winter driving conditions brought on by a dusting of snow and a layer of ice greeted motorists for the Wednesday morning commute along many Lakeland roads.

LAKELAND - While St. Paul RCMP had not received any reports Wednesday morning, it was a slower commute to town for many out-of-town motorists travelling on highways across the region. Winter arrived abruptly overnight, making for icing conditions on the morning of Nov. 2.

"Roads are snow covered and slick in areas, so drivers are advised to drive with caution," said Kellieka Formanek, Detachment Services Assistant and Media Relations Officer at the St. Paul Detachment. She recommended drivers can check 511 to updates on road conditions before heading out.

Similar conditions were being experienced in the Bonnyville area.

"The road conditions are slippery compared to recent weather but no more treacherous than we would get in the middle of winter," said Regional Fire Chief Dan Heney, Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA).

Bonnyville Station 5 responded at 6:55 p.m. last night to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 28 near Range Road 463.

"None of the occupants were transported by EMS and both vehicles required a tow," said Heney.

"The BRFA advises that drivers should be patient and give themselves enough time to drive safely. Further, if not already done it is recommended to ensure tires are rated for this kind of weather and are in good shape," he added.

Poor driving conditions have been reported in other areas of the province, including southern Alberta where Cochrane and Rocky View County emergency crews responded to about 15 collisions that ranged from single vehicle rollovers to multiple vehicle pile ups, on Nov. 1.

"As the poor weather conditions continue today (Nov. 2) with icy roads, snow, wind and limited visibility, motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving, or stay home if travel is not absolutely necessary," according to Cochrane RCMP.
