MALLAIG – Life is a series of risks and rewards, according to Mallaig School Principal Kellie Handford. The school celebrated this year’s graduating class of 2025 on May 26, with Handford speaking about how “life is a gamble.”
Life might “seem like a risky proposition,” she told the graduates. “But I believe it speaks to the exciting and unpredictable future that lies ahead for you.”
There will be times when the graduates will have to trust their instincts or learn from people around them, she said.
She expressed confidence that as the graduates take the next step of their lives, they will be successful as long as they keep all the lessons and education they have learned.
“We have witnessed your growth, resilience, and unique talents blossom within these walls,” she said. “You’ve navigated challenges, celebrated triumphs, and emerged stronger and wiser.”
Life may and will continue to present challenges and the graduates will sometimes win and sometimes lose, but every experience will help them grow.
She encouraged them to, “Take chances, embrace the unknown, and make your mark on the world.”
Shawn Vallee, the school’s valedictorian, also acknowledged the road ahead will always not be so smooth, as he spoke to the graduating class. But the road to graduation hasn’t been easy either, yet the graduates did not give up. They persevered instead.
He encouraged his class to keep persevering. “We will all face new obstacles. People will challenge us. Life will test us, but now we know how to face it.”
Vallee thanked all the teachers, families, and everyone who supported each and every graduate, who not only believed in them but ensured they were ready to take the next step.
“This isn’t goodbye but the beginning of everything,” said Vallee. “Our future starts now.”
This year's Mallaig graduates are: Riley Feland, Emily Gehring, Wyatt Gillard, Carley Hedrick, Lane Martin, Neil Mulkay, Brooke Pchelnyk, Owen Robinson, Erik Sloan, Jenna Vallee, Shawn Vallee, and Trevor Vallee.
