MD Council approves 23 speed limit changes

By the end of March, 23 speed zones throughout the MD of Bonnyville will have new speed limits and corresponding signage posted in effected subdivisions, hamlets and roads. These changes are based on a review of the municipality's road upgrades, traffic and other factors.

BONNYVILLE – The MD of Bonnyville council gave second and third reading to a Speed Rate Bylaw that included 23 changes to the speed limits of roads, highways and hamlets throughout the Municipal District, during a regular council meeting on March 23.

With the passing of Bylaw No. 1796, the speed in rural subdivisions has been reduced to 30 km/h, while a number of roads recently built to highway standards have been increased from 80 km/h to 90 km/h.

The changes to speed zones come after the previous council adopted the Speed Limit Policy on May 27, 2020, directing administration to collect speed limits throughout the municipality.

The data was collected and reviewed by the MD’s Public Safety Department, which showed there was reason to change some of the speed limits in various subdivisions and roads throughout the MD.

The changes were based on several factors, including traffic, location, road material and conditions, according to MD documents.

Municipal crews will be installing new signage indicating the new speed limits, which should be done by the end of March.
