LAKELAND - Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr says he is honoured to be named chair of the Building Communities Cabinet Policy Committee.

“I’m grateful to Premier Smith for the confidence she has placed in me. This is a significant position within caucus, and I’m committed to ensuring our work helps shape thoughtful, effective legislation and policy that serves the needs of Albertans,” said Cyr in a statement to Lakeland This Week.

The Building Communities committee reviews proposed legislation and policy initiatives related to community development, including municipal affairs, education and childcare, transportation and economic corridors, and tourism and sport.

According to Cyr, the committee is an early but essential role in the legislative process. He said his goal is ensure the legislation that ultimately reaches cabinet for consideration is “high-quality” and “thoughtfully developed.”

“This means giving the members of the BCC the opportunity to ask hard questions, identify potential unintended consequences, ensure appropriate consultation with affected stakeholders, and finally ensuring that proposals are realistic, effective, and grounded in community priorities,” said Cyr.

He said the committee is also an opportunity to ensure rural and northeastern communities like Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul are “not only included, but respected, so that the challenges and opportunities facing our region are clearly understood as part of Alberta’s broader path forward,” said Cyr.

The appointment was announced by the province on May 26.

Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock MLA Glenn van Dijken was named chair of the Alberta First cabinet policy committee, and Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely was named chair of the Economic Development cabinet policy committee on the same day.
