MLA David Hanson's office is looking for nominees for the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal.

LAKELAND - Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA David Hanson's constituency office is hoping to gather nominations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, honouring residents who have contributed to the country, province or a particular region of Alberta, community or field.

The office is a program partner for the award, and is accepting local nominations until Oct. 28, 2022.

"We will then have a selection committee, with representatives from within our community, selecting the most deserving candidates for submission," explained Julie Krawiec, constituency assistant.

Residents are eligible if they are a constituent who is a Canadian Citizen, or has permanent residency status in Canada. The nominee must have been alive on Feb. 6, 2022, the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty's accession to the throne.

Recipients must have "Demonstrated contributions to Canada, Alberta, a particular region of Alberta, community or field," and "Played a significant role in Alberta’s COVID-19 response at the local level, and/or provided significant volunteer service at the local level," according to information from the MLA's constituency office.

All nominations are confidential and must be for individuals, not groups. Self-nominations are not being accepted.

When nominating an individual, nominators must submit basic information along with a 50-300 character citation, which is a description of the reasons why the nominee is being put forward for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, "with focus on the achievements of the individual."

The Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal will be awarded to 7,000 Albertans throughout 2022 in recognition of their contributions to the province, according to the Government of Alberta.

"The Medal program will be part of the Platinum Jubilee year celebrations, organized by the Government of Alberta. Permission is being sought from the Government of Canada to have the Medal included in the Order of Precedence, along with the other commemorative medals of the Canadian Honours System," states information from the provincial government.

Some Albertans, such as MLAs, Indigenous leaders, as well as members of the Alberta Order of Excellence, will receive the medal automatically for the work they've done.

Several program partners have been invited to submit nominations for the medals. Partners include MLAs, Indigenous organizations, the Canadian Armed Forces, Protective Services and some non-governmental community-based organizations.

Nominations can be emailed to the constituency office at [email protected] before the deadline of Oct. 28.
