More details released on fatal shooting in Kehewin

Alberta RCMP has released further information regarding a fatal shooting that took place in Kehewin Cree Nation on Wednesday night, that ultimately led to the suspect being shot my RCMP members.

A 54-year-old man from Kehewin Cree Nation was the victim of a fatal shooting that took place on March 9.

KEHEWIN – On Wednesday evening, Bonnyville RCMP received a call of a reported shooting on Kehewin Cree Nation, at about 7:15 p.m.  

When responding officers arrived, they located a 54-year-old male victim from Kehewin Cree Nation deceased, according to an RCMP press release. 

Members from the Bonnyville Detachment and the Cold Lake RCMP Police Dog Service began the investigation into the fatal shooting as well as a search for the suspect.

Later that same evening on March 9, RCMP members arrived at a residence in Kehewin where the suspect was believed to be located.  

A confrontation between RCMP members and the 22-year-old male suspect occurred after the man exited the residence, during which officers discharged their service weapons. 

The 22-year-old suspect has been identified, but his name has not been released by police. Currently, he remains in hospital receiving medical treatment. 

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the homicide investigation.  

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is taking over the investigation into the discharging of police firearms by RCMP members. 

An autopsy of the 54-year-old victim will be scheduled in the near future, state RCMP. 

No further information into the incident is being provided by police at this time.
