Most successful Cookie Walk to date

Volunteers with the United Church Women baked and plated over 4,000 cookies to sell at St. John’s United Church’s annual Cookie Walk bake sale. All 170 plates of assorted cookies were sold before the end of the day on Dec. 3.

BONNYVILLE – After a two-year hiatus, St. John’s United Church held its most successful Cookie Walk to date, selling 170 plates of cookies on Dec. 3.

Eveline Baker, who has been a lead organizer since the annual Cookie Walk started 11 years ago said, every cookie baked was sold in less than four hours.

And while the event may sound elaborate, “What it is, is a cookie sale, but they are all plated and laid out on long tables. So, people have to walk around the tables and check out all the assortments on the different plates – and that's why we call it the Cookie Walk,” explained Baker.

“I thought it was a catchier name then calling it a bake sale,” she added, with a chuckle.

Previous Cookie Walks allowed shoppers to pick out their own cookies and build plates of two dozen cookies. However, this year’s event had cookie assortments prewrapped and decorated by volunteers.

“I wanted to go that route because I didn't feel like it was safe enough when everybody else touches the tongs and all of that. I just wasn't comfortable with that, so I decided to change it up a bit,” Baker said.

Between 15 and 20 volunteers lent a hand over multiple days baking, plating, wrapping and selling more than 4,000 cookies for the one-day sale.

Baker says the annual cookie sale is often well attended because it helps people scratch Christmas baking off their holiday to-do lists.

This year’s Cookie Walk raised roughly $2,550 that will go toward church expenses and other initiatives carried out by the United Church Women’s group.

“It is amazing what we brought in just by selling cookies,” she said. “It’s the best we've ever done and we're going to continue it as long as we can get the help.”
