ST. PAUL - It was an evening of food and dance, with plenty of smiles and a celebratory mood, honouring a variety of cultures.
On June 27, the Mannawanis Native Friendship Centre, with the help of the greater community, served up a meal showcasing authentic cuisine from across the world. Then, after everyone's tummies were full, a set of 10 performances entertained people. Dances and songs offered locals the chance to wear traditional outfits, dance to traditional music, and perform songs in their native language.
"On June 27, Canadian Multiculturalism Day honours the many cultural communities that help build a strong and vibrant Canadian society," according to information from the Government of Canada. The day offers Canadians an "opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches us collectively" and reaffirms a commitment to "equity, inclusion, and mutual respect."
The Multiculturalism Day celebrations came less than a week after the Friendship Centre hosted its National Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrations.
