Peace officers' Narcan response revives unconscious man

Sirens filled the Lac La Biche downtown on Tuesday afternoon as peace officers, RCMP, ambulance and fire crews responded to a medical call in the back alley south of Main Street.

Sirens filled the Lac La Biche downtown on Tuesday afternoon as peace officers, RCMP, ambulance and fire crews responded to a medical call in the back alley south of Main Street.

Because much of the Main Street is now blocked to traffic due to a large construction project, the alley has become a main detour route for motorists, with peace officers and RCMP patrolling regularly. One of those peace officers was flagged down by a member of the public late Tuesday afternoon after a man was located who appeared to be passed out.

Superintendent Chris Clark with Lac La Biche County's Enforcement Services said officers were taken to an unresponsive man in medical distress from an apparent drug overdose. The man was lying beside the driving lane near the rear entrance of a local business.

"Officers immediately administered Narcan and requested EMS," said Clark, crediting the quick response with a favourable outcome. "Due to the quick actions of the officers and emergency responders, the male was revived and transported to hospital by EMS."

The man's current condition is not known.
