Ranch Rodeo makes its return to St. Paul

ST. PAUL – Multiple teams gathered their steeds and competed at the Ranch Rodeo in the Clancy Richard Arena on Aug. 28, hosted by the St. Paul Agricultural Society. The Ranch Rodeo had cowboys and cowgirls compete and showcase the skills they’ve gained on a ranch.

“[Ranch rodeo] is kind of based around the events of everyday life on a ranch,” explained Paul Wanchuk, a member with the St. Paul Ag Society and one of the organizers of the event. There were events that include trailer loading, sorting, doctoring, branding, and a mix-up of horse race and cow milking.

In the trailer loading event, teams had to cut two cattle from a herd and load them into a livestock trailer along with either one or two horses. Both cowgirls and cowboys had to coordinate and block the path of the cattle with their horses so they wouldn’t regroup with the herd, while at the same time, guiding them to the livestock trailer.

Wanchuk said the last time St. Paul AG Society held the event was in 2019. This year, he added that, “We got quite a few new teams, which is always nice to see. We’re all here to have fun. So, that’s kind of what it’s all about.”

Marsh Farms from Lac La Biche won first place, with the team consisting of Tel Rhine, Troy Rhine, Tate Rhine, and Jacquelyn Marsh.

The second place was awarded to Bar LD from Bonnyville, consisting of Luc Tellier, Dylan Tellier, Stephanie Tellier, and Danny Plouffe.

Wolf Lake won third place with the team formed by Andrew Grayson, Kevin Picray, Lianna Grayson, and Dave Mielke.
