LAKELAND - RCMP are releasing numbers from a recent traffic safety initiative focused on motorists driving through the southwest corner of the Lakeland area last week. that brought RCMP and peace officers together for a day-long blitz on Highways 28 and 63 near Redwater.
The Aug. 18 campaign brought RCMP and peace officers together for a day-long blitz on Highways 28 and 63 near Redwater. The day saw 13 officers on the highways from 8 am to 4 pm, raising awareness for safe driving habits — and issuing 75 tickets for poor habits. More than half of the tickets issued — 42 — were for speeding. RCMP say the high speed of the day was 143 kilometres per hour.
Police also say they issued two distracted driving tickets for cell phone use while driving. They also conducted 16 mandatory alcohol screening tests.
The day-long blitz and partnership between the Redwater RCMP detachment, the RCMP provincial traffic unit, Sturgeon County peace officers and Thorhild County peace officers is expected to be a regular occurrence.
“As we strive to increase safety on our area highways, Redwater RCMP are committed to continuing joint initiatives such as these,” says RCMP Sergeant Jeff Sehn of the Redwater RCMP Detachment.
