School bus driver charged with careless driving

A school bus driver has been charged in relation to a serious collision that occurred near Smoky Lake in December

SMOKY LAKE - RCMP have charged a bus driver with careless driving under the Traffic Safety Act in relation to a serious collision that occured on Dec. 2, 2019, near Smoky Lake.

"After an extensive investigation and assistance from RCMP Collision Analysts and Crown consultation, Smoky Lake RCMP have charged a 66-year-old bus driver in relation to the collision that occurred on Dec. 2, 2019 on Highway 28 near Smoky Lake," reads an RCMP media release, sent out on May 26, 2020. 

The driver will be appearing in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court on Aug. 6.

On Dec. 2, 2019, a school bus carrying 14 children was involved in a serious collision about 5 km west of Smoky Lake. The collision involved the school bus and a crane.

Students on the bus were from H.A. Kostash School. The bus was travelling northbound on Range Road 180 and the crane was westbound on Highway 28 when the collision occurred, according to RCMP.

"One youth suffered serious life threatening injuries and was transported via STARS to Edmonton. Another youth was taken via EMS with serious non-life threatening injuries," said RCMP, shortly after the collision. The driver of the crane was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
