Smoky Lake RCMP investigate structure fires on Hwy 28 corridor

Two recent blazes involve abandoned farm buildings

SMOKY LAKE - Smoky Lake RCMP are looking to the public for help as they investigate two recent structure fires along Highway 28.

The fire locations are separated by about 50 kilometres along the busy east-west Lakeland highway. Both blazes involve abandoned structures near the highway — one just east of Smoky Lake in late December, and the other near Spedden at the beginning of December

The most recent fire was reported on Dec. 23 at 8 p.m. RCMP and fire crews were dispatched to an abandoned building that was on fire on Range Road 165 near the Highway 28 intersection. The entire structure was destroyed. The fire was the second involving abandoned structures near the highway in a two-week span. On Dec. 7, RCMP were notified that an abandoned grain silo south of Spedden had been destroyed by fire.

While both files involve similar structures, RCMP say it is not yet determined if both blazes are related.

Nether building was in use at the time of the fires.

Anyone with information regarding these fires can contact the Smoky Lake RCMP at 780-656-3691 or Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
