ST. PAUL - Both the Town of St. Paul and County of St. Paul approved letters of support toward the renaming of a portion of Highway 28 after well-known area resident Victor Ringuette, who passed away in November of 2021.

RELATED STORY - Ringuette remembered as a good man with a big heart

A request came before Town of St. Paul council on Jan. 10. Gilbert Proulx is spearheading the idea, to recognize an "outstanding Albertan who has done so much by support so many communities in our province, as well as other out of province groups," wrote Proulx an emailed letter, which was sent out to a number of municipalities, and MLA David Hanson.

Proulx says he "firmly" believes that Ringuette should be honoured by the renaming of Highway 28.

"It would be only fitting. It would enshrine a permanent recognition," wrote Proulx.

Ringuette was known across the Lakeland for his contributions to a long list of community-driven initiatives - from hockey, to chuckwagons, to health care initiatives, and more. He was also the owner of a long-running business, B&R Eckel's Transport, a trucking company based in Bonnyville, but that sprawls from Edmonton and across a large portion of Alberta.

On Jan. 11, County of St. Paul council also approved a letter of support for the initiative.
