ST. PAUL - St. Paul's largest school division announced on Tuesday that over 100 full-time equivalent support staff members have been laid off.

On March 28, the Government of Alberta announced it would be adjusting K to 12 funding for all school boards by 14 per cent, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 51 per cent reduction in transportation was also noted.

"St. Paul Education’s total funding reduction was $778,686, and unfortunately, this resulted in the layoff of over 100 full-time equivalent support staff employees," reads a media release from St. Paul Education Regional Division on April 7. "The Board of Trustees certainly recognizes the work of all its employees during these uncertain times and hopes to rehire many of our people back when students eventually return to the classroom. "

"This has been a difficult process as we know that each person is a valued member of our school division," said board chair Heather Starosielski. "We know the level of caring and commitment they have for our students."

Despite the layoffs being effective April 7, SPERD was able to pay the affected employees for the full month of April and will also continue their benefits for May and June.

"Fortunately, the division was able to retain a number of our educational assistants to support all students, including those with unique learning needs," reads the media release. "St. Paul Education acknowledges the many challenges we face in our community during these unprecedented times. The health and safety of everyone is paramount and we wish you the best."
