St. Paul Senior Citizen's Club ready for the winter season

Winter is coming, and the St. Paul Senior Citizen’s Club has begun its winter activities this week, including the Ladies’ Floor Curling that began on Oct. 24, Carpet Bowling that started on Oct. 25, and Mixed Floor Curling beginning Oct. 27.

ST. PAUL – Winter draws near and brings with it a shift in the plethora of activities available at the St. Paul Senior Citizen’s Club.

The club has started its many activities this week, including the Ladies’ Floor Curling that began on Oct. 24, Carpet Bowling that started on Oct. 25, and Mixed Floor Curling beginning Oct. 27.

According to the club, it has been dramatically affected by the pandemic, but it remained afloat thanks to the fundraising efforts to keep it running. The newly minted club president, Dennis Giggs, said, “the activities are starting to take hold again.”

“The people are coming back, rentals are ongoing, pancake breakfasts are ongoing,” he said, explaining the club is in pretty good shape now as opposed to the previous years of COVID. “So, things are turning around.”

The building and its two halls that the club manages are owned by the Town of St. Paul. To keep it operational, in addition to fundraising activities, the club rents out the halls for social activities like weddings or birthday parties.

The club also rents out its halls to groups like the Quilting Bees Guild, which has local quilting enthusiasts crafting quilts and donating them to cancer patients.

In addition to its activities exclusive to the club members, the St. Paul Senior Citizen’s Club also hosts activities open to the community if the opportunity comes along, like the recent Calvin Volrath concert.

Giggs also invites seniors of the community who might not know that the St. Paul Senior Citizen’s Club exists. He said this also includes seniors who may have recently moved to St. Paul or seniors who maybe are “housebound” and are not able to get out often.

“[The club] is an opportunity for fellowship for seniors to get together,” said Giggs, stating he sees the club as community support to seniors, among its other functions. “We’re here to give seniors a chance to come and get together and meet other people.

To seniors interested with joining the club, it is located at 4809 in 47th St. just south of the St. Paul Catholic Cathedral.
