Extendicare Bonnyville is dealing with a significant COVID-19 outbreak in its Bonnyville long-term care facility. One resident has died and there are 23 active cases of COVID-19 among its residents. One other resident has been hospitalized. In addition, 13 staff members have tested positive and are self-isolating.

"We are saddened to confirm one of our residents who had previously tested positive has passed away this week. We have been in touch with this resident’s family to offer our heartfelt condolences," Extendicare Canada spokesperson Laura Gallant said today.

"Extendicare Bonnyville is working closely with the AHS to protect our residents and staff, and contain the spread of the virus. We are following all provincial and local health directives, including adhering to PPE requirements and infection prevention and control practices advised by AHS. All residents are isolating in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and care support," Gallant said.

In a statement to Lakeland Today, she said COVID-19 continues to be "extremely challenging for long-term care communities. As levels of community spread remain high in many regions across Alberta, long-term care homes must continue to combat increased risk of exposure for our dedicated staff and the people they care for."

Extendicare is following the best practice Public Health protocols, with increased cleaning and disinfection schedules in place, including a focus on high touch surfaces like handrails, Gallant assured. Residents are monitored twice daily for symptoms and every staff member is screened before each shift.

"Our first priority, as always, is to maintain the health and safety of our residents, staff and caregivers, and we know this is concerning news for our community. We will continue to keep in close contact with residents, staff and families."
