Thousands raised at annual Road To Hope golf fundraiser

The annual Road To Hope charity golf fundraiser took over the Athabasca Golf Club on Thursday.

ATHABASCA - The annual Road To Hope charity golf fundraiser took over the Athabasca Golf and Country Club on Sept. 8.

The Road To Hope organization offers clients in the Athabasca and Lac La Biche area no-charge rides and drivers to appointments for cancer treatments. In short, it provides what Town of Athabasca councillor Ida Edwards called "an incredible service for our friends and neighbours at their greatest hours of need."

Edwards joined a full roster of 144 golfers at the tournament for the post-game supper and raffle draws.

She thanked event sponsors and the long-standing community support of the organization which has been operating since 2008. She also recognized the many volunteer board members and event helpers who have lent their time and skills over the years.

"Volunteers are a critical element for all organizations ... they have talent, skill-sets,and insights that create a dynamic power, igniting an energy that makes these organizations keep going," she said.

The President of the Road To Hope executive board said the support of the community continues to surpass all expectations.

"The amount of sponsorship we had this year was so overwhelming, we just couldn't believe, and we truly appreciate all the efforts of the all sponsors ... without the volunteers, the support and sponsors, none of this would work," said Chris Hamyln.

Officials will need a little time to tally exact fund totals from this year's event, but expect to generate about $25,000.
