Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Sept. 19 will be a federal holiday, in honour of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

"We have also chosen to move forward with a federal holiday on Monday. We will be working with the provinces and the territories to try and see that we're aligned on this," said Trudeau, on Sept. 13.

"There still are a few details to be worked out, but declaring an opportunity for Canadians to mourn on Monday is going to be important," he added, further stating, "For our part, we will be letting federal employees know that Monday will be a day of mourning."

An accession ceremony to acknowledge King Charles III will be held by the Government of Alberta on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Government House, with Premier Jason Kenney and Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani in attendance.

At 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, a session to debate a motion regarding how the province will honour the Queen's life, is also expected to take place.

"The Government House Leader has notified the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta that the legislature will hold a session to debate a motion celebrating Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s life and public service and offering condolences to the Royal Family," according to the Government of Alberta.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Sept. 8 in her Scottish Castle in Balmoral at the age of 96. She served 70 years as a monarch for the United Kingdom and over a dozen commonwealth countries around the world.
