Ukrainian flag to be raised at Bonnyville Town Hall

‘Having a flag raising ceremony gives us an opportunity to come together as a community, to pray for those families and individuals who are suffering – and my hope is community members recognize that we will show up for them in their time of need,’ says Bonnyville mayor.

BONNYVILLE – Members of the public are invited to attend a flag raising ceremony that will see a Ukrainian flag lifted at the Town of Bonnyville’s administrative building on Friday, March 4, at 1 p.m.

“It is important for Council and the Town to stand in solidarity for those suffering in Ukraine,” Mayor Elisa Brosseau told Lakeland Today in a statement.

“There are many citizens in and around the Town of Bonnyville who are Ukrainian, whose ancestors settled in this region and we need to acknowledge them.”

In a 2006 Community Canada Census, 332,180 Albertans identified as having Ukrainian origins.

Brosseau continued, “Having a flag raising ceremony gives us an opportunity to come together as a community, to pray for those families and individuals who are suffering – and my hope is community members recognize that we will show up for them in their time of need."
