Vaccine rollout through the Lakeland increases

Across the Lakeland, the number of residents getting their COVID-19 vaccination jab is increasing.

LAKELAND - Across the Lakeland, the number of residents like Lac La Biche County Peace Officer Glynton Brittain, getting their COVID-19 vaccination jab is increasing.

According to provincial statistics leading into the week, 42 per cent of residents in the Lac La Biche local geographic area had been given at least one vaccine dose and 11 per cent of the population is fully immunized.

As the number of Lac La Biche area residents getting their vaccine goes up, the province is reporting a sharp decrease in the amount of active COVID-19 cases in the region. Peaking at more than 200 active cases in the first week of May, the latest weekend update was reporting just 58 current, active cases. Other regions in the Lakeland area are seeing reductions in active cases, with 31 reported in the Municipal District of Bonnyville going into the new week, 34 in the County of St. Paul, 49 in Athabasca County and just nine active cases in Smoky Lake County.

Getting the poke

In the Municipal District of Bonnyville, 38 per cent of resident have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with seven percent reporting full vaccination. The St. Paul area is reporting 37 per cent with one dose and 12 percent with their full vaccine. Smoky Lake County has one of the highest vaccine percentages in the area, with 50 per cent of its residents reporting one dose and 20 per cent that are fully inoculated.

In the Lac La Biche area, vaccines are available at the health unit, the Associated Medical Clinic and all four Lac La Biche pharmacies.

Across Alberta as of Sunday, 61.5 per cent of the province's population over the age of 12 was reported to have had at least one vaccine dose. In all, according to Alberta Health Services statistics through the weekend, more than 2.72 million doses of vaccine have been given to Alberta residents, with 381,000 Albertans being fully immunized.
