Fundraiser - Garage sale volunteer Carolyn Onusko (centre) waved a welcome to visitors to one of Parkview Extended Care’s annual garage sale fundraisers, where everything from books and picture frames to small appliances and everything in between was on offer. The event will be replaced with a bottle drive this year.

ELK POINT – Even without any cases in the local area, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on volunteer groups, including those who support the Elk Point Health Care Centre and its neighboring Parkview Extended Care.

The Parkview Extendicare Resident Council’s Annual Garage Sale has become a victim of COVID-19, and organizers say that. “Unfortunately this was our biggest fundraiser of the year.”

Money raised through the huge and popular garage sale is used to provide activities for Parkview residents, and to supply items that make their days a bit brighter. These needs go on despite the pandemic, and the organizers are determined to continue their support of the residents, despite the setback.

“To replace that fundraiser, we are asking the community of Elk Point and surrounding area to support us with a bottle drive. The Elk Point Bottle Depot has graciously offered to collect bottles and other recyclables on our behalf. If you are interested and willing to support us, please drop off your beverage containers at the Elk Point Bottle Depot on Saturday, May 30 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.”

The Parkview Resident Council is confident that the community will help their group continue its efforts and thank everyone in advance for their continued support.

Ceremony cancelled

Each year, the dedicated volunteers who make up the Elk Point Palliative Care Society honor area residents who have passed away in the previous twelve months with the lighting of candles and the presentation of flowers to the family members who light those candles during an afternoon at Elk Point Healthcare Centre that also includes uplifting poems, messages and often some special music, followed by a tea.

Unfortunately, due to regulations surrounding the pandemic, their annual Candlelight Ceremony has been snuffed for 2020.

Palliative Care Society president Theresa McNamara reports that her group will not be hosting the ceremony this year to give recognition to those in our communities who have passed away in this past year.

“While this is unfortunate, our thoughts and warm regards are extended to families and friends as you remember your loved ones.”
