Elk Point sports: U13 Avalanche heading to provincials after playoff victory

The Elk Point 13 Avalanche are off to provincials in a couple weeks, afternoon winning the NEAHL Tier 3 championship.

ELK POINT - Elk Point U13 Avalanche are headed to Provincials in Marwayne/Dewberry from March 31 to April 1, after two wins over the Lac La Biche Clippers this past weekend earned them the Tier 3 championship for the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League.

Sunday’s game in Lac La Biche came to a 12-5 conclusion in favour of the Avalanche to wrap up the final playoff series.

They started off the series by steamrollering the Clippers by a 10-2 margin on Saturday at the A. G. Ross Arena. Trace Morgan opened the scoring for the Avs early in the first and kept right on going, ending up with a massive five goals, while Tristan Brousseau and Brendan Kadutski added two each and Boe St. George wound up the game with a single.

Three assists on Saturday came from Wyatt Fontaine, two each from Liam Swedgan, Kale Ockerman, Jaxon Smith and Tristan Brousseau and one each from Remington Reynolds and Brendan Kadutski. Brody Cardinal scored both of the Clippers goals, one assisted by Lincon Shulko and the other unassisted.

U15 out of playoffs

The weekend was much less successful for the U15 Avalanche, who are out of the playoffs after being defeated for a second time by Lloydminster Blazers on Saturday by a single goal. Gunner Crawford scored the lone Elk Point goal late in the first period, assisted by Gavin Kadutski, for a 1-1 tie that lasted for just over eight minutes, before Lloydminster added another, both goalies shutting the gates tight for the final 32 minutes of the game.

Sports beyond Avalanche

Former Avalanche player Evan Ockerman and the Red Deer Kings volleyball teammates defeated NAIT in an exciting four-game match to win the province and represent Alberta at Nationals in Quebec.
