A minor hockey team in Plamondon — the Plamondon Peewee Cougars — has made it to the provincials this year, for the first time in the hamlet's minor hockey 30 years history, says Plamondon Minor Hockey President, Caleb Ryan.
"Plamondon has never had a hockey team go to provincials, not a single one in the 30 years we have been running as an organization and this is the first time we have ever had a team go," said Ryan.
The cougars won their league championship in Tier 4 of the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League when they played and won against Glendon in the best-of-three final where teh Cougars won the first game 3-2 in overtime and then the second game more comfortably with a 9-5 win.
"They were a great little team this year, They battled really hard. In their regular season, they were at a record of 14 wins with two losses and two ties... This team has been really good all year. They never ever got down on themselves and have always been very positive. Their two coaches were amazing, Gary Romynyshyn and Sara Doody did an amazing job," said Ryan.
The Plamondon cougars are headed to Vauxhall for the Tier 4 provincials. The games will take place from March 29-31 with complete schedules and teams yet to be announced.
With the team currently possessing some of the best player stats in the league, Ryan along with the coaches and other team staff feel optimistic about their upcoming games in the provincials, and also sends a message of encouragement and support to the young Cougars.
"They had two of the top three scorers in the league and four scorers in the top 10. Our goalie has one of the best records as well. He has the best win-loss record, he faced a lot of shots and played very well," said Ryan, adding how proud the community and the hockey association is of the team. "Good luck from everyone in Plamondon, you are the first team from Plamondon to make the provincials so, the whole town is rallying behind you. We look forward to bringing home the provincial championship."
