Pontiacs end 2023 with two wins

The Bonnyville Pontiacs won their final two games of December beating the Drayton Valley Thunder 5-1 and the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-3.

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville Pontiacs won their final two games of December beating the Drayton Valley Thunder 5-1 and the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-3. 

Wingers Billy Batten and Myles Gauld each had three points during the Dec. 29 game against the Thunder. Max Seguin and Myles Gauld each had two goals with Batten adding the other. Goaltender Bodee Weiss had an impressive performance, having an almost perfect save percentage saving 25 out of 26 shots. 

The Pontiacs scored four answered goals in the third period and only allowed one Power Play goal on special teams. 

Bonnyville defeats Whitecourt 

In a nail-biter against the Whitecourt Wolverines, the Pontiacs managed to narrowly hold-on to their lead, beating the Wolverines 4-3 on Dec. 30. 

Luka Sukovic had a pair of goals with Myles Gauld and Brent Hoshowski adding the others. 

The Pontiacs let their foot off the gas in the second half of the game, allowing two goals in the second period and taking five straight penalties in the second and third periods. The third period saw the Pontiacs being outshot 11-3. 

The Pontiacs enter the New Year with a 19-17-3 record and 41 points, tied with the Drumheller Dragons for ninth place in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) out of 16 teams.

Bonnyville has a 4-5-1 record in their last 10 games and will play the Spruce Grove Saints at Grant Fuhr Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m.  

After that, the Pontiacs will head home and prepare to host the Fort McMurray Oil Barrons at the RJ Lalonde Arena on Thursday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m.
