Portage golfer plays with county's best at nationals

Lyric Lewis represents the province at Quebec championships

Portage College Community Social Work student Lyric Lewis had her work cut out for her last week, as she spent a week on the greens and fairways of a Quebec golf course competing in the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championship.

Lewis, who earned her spot at the national event with a top-three finish in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference golf provincial championships in September, finished out of the top-10 at the October 16-20 national event.

None of the men’s team players from Portage qualified for the national event.

Lewis played four rounds in the nationals, held over four days at the Club de Golf Lorette in Quebec City. She was among 19 of the country’s top collegiate women golfers at the event. On the men’s side, 56 golfers were competing for the national championship. Lewis shared the course with golfers from schools in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta including Medicine Hat College, Fanshawe College, NAIT and Humber College.

Results

Lewis finished the week with a four-round total of 367, on the par 72 course, shooting an opening day round of 93 on Tuesday, followed by a 92 on Wednesday. She rounded out the four days with an 87 on Thursday and a 95 on Friday.

The 2023 women’s national gold-medal winner, Mackenzie Cloutier of Quebec’s John Abbott College finished with her four-rounds with a total of 291 shots, just three over par.

On the men’s side, Felix Bouchard from Quebec’s Andre Laurendeau, finished with a four-round total of 281, shooting sub-par scores in each round — 69, 71, 71, 70 — for an overall seven-under-par finish.

The lowest score of the championships was a seven-under-par 65 shot in the third round by Medicine Hat College men’s team player Michael Valk who finished second overall.

Jim Knight, the Manager of Athletics and Recreation for Portage College, accompanied Lewis on the trip to Quebec. According to Knight, heavy rains on Sunday and Monday nights had soaked the course she was playing on. Over the four days, the competitors had to contend with cool, rainy and cloudy weather.

More details on the event and Lewis’ reaction are expected in the coming days.
