A total of 14 athletes from St. Paul Regional High School picked up medals at the St. Paul Athletics Association (SPAA) badminton championships last Wednesday, and all six individuals or pairs that took home gold will represent St. Paul as hosts of the zone championships on April 28.

“All our kids, even the kids that we got at the last minute, they all contributed to the win for sure. It was good,” said St. Paul Regional Badminton Coach Corey deMoissac.

Glendon School managed 11 podium appearances at last Wednesday’s SPAA championships, three gold, four silver and four bronze, and the school will be sending five athletes to zones.

Two Hills School will be sending six of its nine medal winning players to zones, while Ashmont will be sending two of its six podium finishers, and École du Sommet and New Myrnam School will each be sending one.

St. Paul Regional athlete Mikael Beaudoin, who won gold in the senior mixed doubles event with Randi Drummond, said it was a trying day on the court that saw the pair take on Glendon’s Austin Paton and Emily Knapp in the round robin before defeating them once again in the gold medal match.

“It was good. We only had about three teams to play so it was a pretty long day,” said Beaudoin, adding he and Drummond have built a great deal of chemistry after playing together for two years.

“It has grown ever since our first year, and it keeps getting better and better.”

Drummond added the two are looking forward to representing Regional at zones, and hope to reach the top of the podium at provincials after a bronze medal finish last year.

“It would mean a lot to be there again,” said Drummond. “I think we’ll pull through.”
