St. Paul Regional High School had a successful afternoon as hosts of the St. Paul Athletics Association senior track and field finals last Wednesday afternoon, as the school took home the boys and combined points banners while Glendon claimed the girls banner.
“We’re very happy with the performances from all our kids, and especially with winning those two titles, that’s always nice. Our kids worked hard, whether it was the boys or the girls,” said St. Paul Regional Athletic Director Hank Smid. “Our performances by our girls were outstanding, and we’ll see that as they move on to zones and to provincials.
“Kudos to Glendon. They got girls interested and motivated, and they did a great job on Wednesday.”
Glendon managed to take home the girls banner with a strong showing from the school’s female athletes, and as Athletic Director Daryn Galatiuk pointed out, Glendon was just on the heels of St. Paul Regional in the combined points category, registering a total of 1,408.5 points to Regional’s 1,470.
“We just don’t have a lot of males in our building to be honest. If we would have had a few more males attending, we would have had a better shot at winning the overall points over Regional, which would have been the first time ever,” said Galatiuk. “We left a lot on the table, I’m sure Regional probably did too, but we’re creeping closer . . . I’d like to congratulate St. Paul Regional on another fantastic year. They’ve got an excellent group of athletes and I think their quality athletes are going to do really well provincially this year, so I’m looking forward to watching them”
St. Paul Regional will play host again next week as the zone championships will take place at the local track, and Smid added that an impressive percentage of Regional’s SPAA athletes have advanced to zones.
“We had 49 kids compete, and out of those 42 of them advanced. We’re really happy about that,” said Smid. “We’re really happy with the participation and the outcome from how they competed on Wednesday.”
Glendon will also be sending a high percentage of its competing athletes from SPAA to zones on Wednesday, as 27 of the 35 Glendon athletes that competed last week will return to Regional for zones.
“Over the last few years that’s been about usual for us. We only usually have a small handful that don’t make it, and the hopes are that the next following week after zones, we get anywhere between eight to 10 kids come through,” said Galatiuk, adding he was very pleased by the performances of all of his athletes. “If we get eight to 10 kids with a number of events, we still have a shot at another provincial title this year . . . we’ve won for four straight years.”
Smid added while the level of competition will only increase as athletes move forward into zones, locking up a spot in provincials will guarantee athletes some down time between their events.
“It’s going to be a busy day for them next week on Wednesday, but we know that if they advance to provincials, it breaks into a two-day event and they have a little more rest in between,” he said. “For our distance runners who do the 800, the 1,500 and the 3,000 and then maybe run a 4x400, it’s a lot to ask them to do. They do it, and they know that they’re doing it for their school, and that’s why they do it.”
