For the Mallaig Stingers boys’ volleyball team, the year started with a singular focus – they were in it to storm their way through provincials to the top spot.

A lot of eyes lately have been on Bonnyville Pontiacs defenceman Jake Gresh and the league has begun to take notice as well. Gresh was awarded the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) defensive player of the week for the week of Nov. 21.

With the World Junior A Hockey Challenge getting closer, invitations to the camp have been sent out. Bonnyville leading point scorer, Derek Brown, is the lone Pontiac who is been invited to the training camp.

High school teams from across the St. Paul Athletics Association gathered in St. Paul to take part in volleyball championships, last week. St. Paul Regional and Mallaig split the banners, with the Mallaig girls taking first, and the St. Paul boys taking first. See this week's Journal for full coverage of the tournament.

It was a busy week for the Pontiacs both on and off the ice. Picking up four of a possible six points in a tight northern division race. Tuesday's game the Pontiacs hosted the Spruce Grove Saints collecting a 7-2 win.

After facing off in SPAA finals, the St. Paul Regional Saints and Mallaig Stingers boys and girls teams set their sights on capturing their zone banners this past weekend, a feat that all four teams managed to achieve.
