Sombre reflections marked this weekend, as local Legions held Remembrance Day ceremonies and across the country, people paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to observe a minute of silence.

In the five years since I started work at the St. Paul Journal, I have seen St. Paul become the centre of a media storm a few times.

Sometimes you just need a day off. The alarm-clock sounds, the sun's shinning, the birds are singing and then there's you, slumped over, still in bed, unable to get up, get out and get going on the day – stuck in an inexplicable stupor.

A few weekends ago, I had the honour and privilege to spend the weekend babysitting my five-year-old nephew, Aiden, in Wainwright, and he happened to have two hockey games during that time.

November has rolled around, and the first day of the 11th month marks a special occasion for me, the day that I pin a poppy to my chest.

We owe our soldiers more than just a minute of silence on Nov. 11. We owe them our freedom, our lives, our right to vote and our democratic society.

It's been a little while since I last voiced my opinion in the Nouvelle. For the most part, I have been doing my thing in the completely objective corners of the paper – churning out news, sports and community stories at a steady pace.

Some who know me well would say my entire reason for heading "Alberta bound" from my warm, Ontario home was secretly so I could stalk and meet my not-so-secret country crush: Paul Brandt.
