ST. PAUL - Motorists travelling between St. Paul and St. Brides on May 9 are being asked to be extra mindful on the road, as athletes of all ages take part in the 41st RCMP Challenge Cup Relay Race, better known as the RCMP Road Race.

The RCMP Road Race is an annual event organized by the St. Paul RCMP and has historically seen plenty of participation from the broader St. Paul community.

"The event is an opportunity for youth to interact with members of the RCMP in a positive environment, working towards stronger relationships within the community. The event encourages interactive partnerships between local law enforcement and the individuals, organizations, and relevant stakeholders that form our community," according to Steven Duquette, operational watch clerk at the St. Paul RCMP detachment.

The race includes wide-spread participation from several schools in the Lakeland. The race "is an excellent opportunity to promote physical wellness and engage youth with our community policing initiatives. As an organization, it is vital that connections are formed with youth so that they known that they can approach members of the RCMP when they are needed," said Duquette.

On Tuesday, the public can expect to see relay teams from junior and senior high school, taking part in the race, which begins west of St. Brides, continuing east along Highway 29, and into St. Paul. The race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will be done by about 12:30 p.m.

"We ask that the motoring public remain vigilant and exercise caution if they are planning travel that will include this route as runners will be present alongside the south shoulder of Highway 29," said Duquette.

St. Paul RCMP will be present throughout the event along with partners from other public safety agencies to monitor traffic and ensure the safety of all participants. Race rules prohibit coaches, spectators, parents, or fans from driving alongside runners and only authorized vehicles and personnel will be allowed to park south of the highway.

"All rules of the road must be obeyed and all applicable legislation will remain in effect," confirms Duquette.

Members from each relay team will run a distance of one mile before handing a relay race baton off to the next teammate. The race wraps up at the St. Paul Rec. Centre

"This year, as with many years prior, we are hosting this event alongside our partners with St. Paul and Area Victim Services. It goes without saying that this event is made possible with the support we receive from local businesses and partner agencies who regularly make substantial contributions," said Duquette.
