Anglers of all levels attend Alphonse Tremblay Memorial Fish Derby

The Alphonse Tremblay Memorial Fish Derby is an opportunity for anglers of different skill levels to come together for some fun, as well as those interested to test their luck.

ST. PAUL – The Alphonse Tremblay Memorial Fish Derby is an opportunity for anglers of different skill levels to come together for some fun, as well as those interested to test their luck.

On Feb. 19, the St. Paul Fish and Game Association (SPFGA) hosted its annual fish derby as part of Shiver Fest at Willie’s Pond from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dave Doonanco, the association’s president, said he was happy to see people of all ages stop by throughout the day. Approximately 100 people participated in the Family Day event.

“It was a really nice day. It’s probably why we had more people than normal,” he said, acknowledging the sunny weather was a welcome addition. “It was good to see lots of kids out there too,” trying out their luck in capturing some game.

The event was open to all, even to those wanted to try ice fishing for the first time. While prizes were handed out, the main focus of the event is simple - to have fun.

“Just a big thank you for everybody coming out and supporting it, and for all the people who helped organize the event,” said Doonanco.

The annual Family Day fishing derby was started by long-time SPFGA member, Alphonse Tremblay. When Tremblay passed away a few years ago, the fishing derby’s name was changed to reflect him as a tribute.
