Boscombe 4-H Club members show sheep, heifers, and steers

BOSCOMBE - Wildfire smoke muted the intensity of the hot sun as the Boscombe 4-H Multi Club held its achievement day outdoors at the Boscombe Community Centre on May 19. The event was an opportunity for the 18 members to show off their animals and to demonstrate the work they put into raising them over the past year.

The club has three project groups - sheep, heifers, and steers, as well as a group of four Cleaver Kids, which is an early introduction to 4-H for youth between the ages of 6 and 8 years old.

We all know how animals have a mind of their own. At an event such as this one, members of the Club require confidence and tenacity to remain composed in dealing with a large, sometimes unruly animal, while the judge evaluates the animal’s degree of finish, structural correctness, and eye appeal.

Judging the sheep projects was Nicole Schieck from Two Hills, while the heifer and steer projects were judged by a husband and wife team, Dan and Heather Brundige, from north of Bonnyville.

When judging the sheep, Schieck noted that Intermediate member, Odin St. Arnault, “had great command of his sheep.” Hearing this well-earned praise, St. Arnault beamed with pride.

At the conclusion of the event, Dan Brundige commended the youth, saying, “You could be at home playing video games, but you’re here showing calves, that speaks volumes.” He emphasized, “You will be community leaders in the future.”

Club leaders, parents, families, and volunteers play a huge role in the success of the Boscombe 4-H Multi Club.
