The Easter weekend proved to be a busy one for St. Paul Fire Department.
An early morning fire north of St. Paul destroyed an unoccupied home Saturday. St. Paul firefighters responded to the fire in the area of TWP 590 and RR 101 at about 2:20 a.m., according to Fire Chief Trevor Kotowich, after a passing motorist spotted the flames and called in the alarm.
The structure, a new model mobile home, was totally destroyed. No one was living in the home and the fire is now under investigation.
With just a few short hours of sleep, the firefighters then went ahead with their annual boot drive to raise money to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Kotowich said motorists in the community again stepped up in big way contributing $6,579 to this year’s campaign.
“People responded very well,” Kotowich said, adding there’s a few more donations coming in which will add to the tally.
Later that day, the department responded to call just east of St. Paul after a kite got caught in a power line and sparked a small grass fire below. No injuries were sustained, and the fire crew was able to extinguish the fire quickly despite the windy conditions.
