St. Paul Royal Canadian Legion serves pancakes

The St. Paul Royal Canadian Legion hosted its annual pancake breakfast Friday at Legion Hall as part of rodeo week festivities.

ST. PAUL – The St. Paul Royal Canadian Legion hosted its annual pancake breakfast Friday at Legion Hall as part of rodeo week festivities.

The menu featured pancakes and sausages, with mini quiches made from eggs donated by Giant Tiger.

“It brings our community together,” said Peter Bednarchuk, president of the St. Paul Royal Canadian Legion. “They sit at our tables, socialize . . . [and] they might see people that they know,” who they might not have seen for a long time, he said.

Bednarchuk thanked the over 300 people who came out, because the pancake breakfast also helps raise funding for the Legion’s initiatives, including support to youth groups, or club-specific initiatives like its annual tour program where students get to tour the Legion’s hall.

“In the last three years, we have fed over 450 school lunches to children, and that's easily in excess of $1,000 a year. But, you know, they get to understand more about Canada, [and] learn about our community's national service,” he said, referring to veterans and people from the community who still serve in the military today.

According to Bednarchuk, the Legion’s major contribution this year was a $15,000 donation to the St. Paul and District Hospital Foundation for a new CT scanner purchase. “We feel that’s a key thing to have in our community.”

Up next for the Legion is its Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at the Recreation Centre.
