ST. PAUL – A search is underway for a new executive director for the Capella Centre, a women’s shelter in St. Paul, to help guide the organization into the next chapter.

Jack McIntyre, who served as the centre’s executive director from July 2023 to January 2024, said he was grateful for the opportunity to work at the centre.

“It was a really remarkable experience. It provides a vital service to the community, and they do a really good job,” said McIntyre.

He also commended and thanked the staff for their hard work. “It was an honour to work with each and every one of them,” McIntyre said.

“I’m also really grateful for the great community support,” he said. “We’re really lucky to have the quality of people that we do have working for the community.”

Kellie Nichiporik, board president of the Capella Centre, in a statement to Lakeland This Week, says the women’s shelter is entering into its 40th year of operation in St. Paul.

“Women’s shelters have come a long way from very humble beginnings with community members having meetings in the back of businesses, scraping together funding, and even housing women and children fleeing from domestic violence in their own homes,” she explains.

The Capella Centre now includes a 20-bed shelter. The organization also has two second-stage apartments to keep families safe and secure while they take their next steps.

Speaking to the search for a new executive director, Nichiporik says the position “requires the leadership of highly motivated and passionate individual, with understanding of non-profit work.”

The person will be responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the centre, including strategic planning, financial management, and leading a “diverse team to carry out the mission of the Centre to empower individuals and families to break the cycle of domestic violence, through safety, knowledge and respect,” she says.

The board is looking for an executive director who is community-minded, collaborative, and someone who can build relationships with the Capella’s supporters and partners.

“We are thrilled to commemorate four decades of success and growth, while anticipating a future with a new Executive Director who will lead us into the next chapter of excellence and achievement.”
