RCMP confirmed human remains were found near a residence in Saddle Lake on the evening of June 25.
Cpl. Ron Bumbry spoke to the Journal on Thursday, saying police were actively searching the area with the assistance of Police Dog Services and RCMP Search members.
Police were also working with Office of the Medical Examiner to identify the remains. Bumbry said he did not have a specific time-frame in which those results would be made available.
"We cannot confirm at this time that the remains are linked to a previous missing person investigation in Saddle Lake," said Bumbry.
He did however confirm that the remains were found about one kilometre from the last known location of missing person Kimberly Cardinal.
This spring, family members, along with other groups, spent time search for Cardinal, who was last seen leaving a friend's home in Saddle Lake on April 23. The mother of three was reported missing on May 6 and continues to be a missing person.
