Mallaig’s eighth annual Cabrini Cup sets the stage for competition and fun

Everyone is invited to take part in the Cabrinia Cup, which features some stiff competition in the annual bean bag tournament, along with a unique tractor and car show complete with parade.

MALLAIG – People from across the area are encouraged and invited to take part in the eighth annual Cabrini Cup, set for Aug. 26 in Mallaig at Cabrini Park.

The Cabrini Cup is an annual charity bean bag tournament. The bean bag game, also called cornhole, is a lawn game where players and teams attempt to shoot a bean bag into a hole on an angled board, explained Ryan Berg, one of the organizers of the tournament.

It costs $80 per two-person team to sign up. The competition is open to people 14 years old and up. The sign-up fee also includes supper. Those who do not want to compete can still enjoy supper, at a cost of $20.

For registration or more information, people can get in touch with either Berg at 780-210-7309 or Laurier Jodoin at 780-201-7124. All proceeds from the event will go to the Mallaig Minor Hockey Association.

In conjunction with the Cabrini Cup is also the Mallaig Antique Tractor and Car Show, as well as a tractor parade on the morning of the event.

Henri Amyotte is among the coordinators of the show and parade. He said that traditionally the parade and car show has been well attended by people from near and far.

“It’s all on grass so it’s a nice atmosphere [and] it’s a good venue,” says Amyotte.

“We start with the pancake breakfast at the museum and then we register [tractor and car show participants] after that,” he said. “We usually get anywhere from 50 to 60 tractors, and it’s the same thing with cars, with somewhere around 100 units.”

The Cabrini Cup competition is set to begin at about 11 a.m. And the tractor show will start at 1 p.m., with the bean bag tournament pausing briefly so everyone can enjoy the parade.

“Hopefully people would be willing to come out and have a look at something unique... with the tractors and the cars at the same time,” said Amyotte.

Berg reiterated the event is open to everyone - from near and far.

“The more people we get out the better, and the more people come and buy a burger or lunch, it all goes to Mallaig Minor Hockey. So, any support is appreciated,” said Berg.

It’s simply a day filled with fun and activities.
