Myrnam Agricultural Society and Senior Citizens Centre celebrate 50-year anniversaries

In July, the community of Myrnam celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Myrnam and District Agricultural Society and the Myrnam Senior Citizens Centre during the Myrnam Fun Days.

MYRNAM – On July 20, the community of Myrnam celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Myrnam and District Agricultural Society and the Myrnam Senior Citizens Centre during the Myrnam Fun Days.

The annual event saw a range of activities including kids’ games and a parade.

Nestor Saskiw is one of the ag society’s board members. He is also the president of the Senior Citizens Centre.

He said the ag society was incorporated in February of 1974. The society was founded to provide a facility for the youth, adults, and families of the area, culminating in the construction of the Myrnam Arena, which opened in 1981.

“The arena was a hive of activities,” said Saskiw, hosting hockey teams at all levels, as well as many fundraising activities to improve the arena, leading to additional facilities within.

Over the years, the society also worked to improve and build more community facilities including ball diamonds and a soccer field.

Saskiw also provided some history about the Myrnam Senior Citizens Centre, which was founded in May 1974. He said Seniors Citizens Centre has also been a vital part of the community.

The group opened the actual centre in November of 1974, providing a place for seniors to gather, enjoy coffee, play cards, and participate in various activities.

The Myrnam and District Ukrainian Dance Club also celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Saskiw expressed pride in how these three clubs “are still alive... and doing really well.”
