RCMP arrest suspects in robbery and carjacking

On Jan. 20, at about 8 p.m., Bonnyville RCMP responded to a call of an armed robbery and carjacking near Highway 41.

A cab driver was transporting two men from St. Paul to Kehewin Cree Nation when they demanded he pull over, according to an RCMP press release. After the cab driver pulled over, the suspects demanded money and started to assault him. The victim was stabbed in the leg with a knife during the altercation and suffered cuts to his hands but he was able to flee from the vehicle.

The suspects then stole the vehicle, leaving the victim stranded on the road. The victim suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by a passing citizen.

RCMP members from Cold Lake, Elk Point, St. Paul, and Police Dog Services (PDS) assisted in patrolling the area, with the stolen vehicle found abandoned in a field in Kehewin Cree Nation. RCMP executed a search warrant at two separate residences on Kehewin Cree Nation and arrested both suspects from the armed robbery and carjacking, according to the release.

Jayden Gilbert John, a 22-year-old from Kehewin Cree Nation, has been charged with 13 offences, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, mischief over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a methamphetamine, failure to comply with an undertaking and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license.

Stacey Dustin Moosepayo, a 33-year-old from Kehewin Cree Nation, has been charged with six offences, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, mischief over $5,000, failure to comply with an undertaking and failure to comply with recognizance.

Both were remanded into custody to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court. Three suspects were also taken into custody during the execution of warrants for possession of stolen property.
