"This declaration is intended to draw attention to the significant challenges local producers are currently experiencing - and are expected to continue facing in the weeks and months ahead," reads a media release from Smoky Lake County.

"The declaration also emphasizes the vital importance of agriculture to our municipality, our province, and the global food supply chain," according to Smoky lake County.

The municipality will be sending letters to the provincial Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, along with the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
