St. Paul 4-H District’s top communicators named in Ashmont

The top presenters and speakers from six 4-H Communications competitions across the St. Paul 4-H District took to the stage of the Ashmont Agriplex on Sunday for one more round of judging for the District championship hosted by Boscombe 4-H Multi Club.

ASHMONT – The top presenters and speakers from six 4-H Communications competitions across the St. Paul 4-H District took to the stage of the Ashmont Agriplex on Sunday for one more round of judging for the District championship hosted by Boscombe 4-H Multi Club.

The day started off with four presentations, with a Senior presentation entitled ‘Now and Then’ by Elk Point 4-H Multi Club member Jove Boorse, assuring his fellow Beatles fans that the iconic group’s music is still very much alive, taking first place and the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club duo of Bentley Looy and Seth Martin’s very informative presentation on ‘2-Stroke and 4-Stroke Engines placing second.

Two other St. Paul Multi Club members, Junior Payslee Trefenanko, who told of her love for basketball in ‘My Daily Sweat’ and Intermediate member Lane Laschowski with his presentation on the steps to ‘Building a Rebar Fire Poker’ also received first place awards.

Then it was on to a series of 15 prepared speeches, alternating with impromptu speeches, to determine the district’s top speakers, with three judges for each age group providing written comments on both of each participant’s efforts, as well as calculating the points that would determine the winners at the end of the day.

In the Junior division, Sierra Robinson of the Goodridge Beef Club placed first with a prepared speech on ‘The Wonderful World of Art’ and an impromptu telling ‘Tings You Don’t Know About Me’ placed first and Emelia Kemsley of St. Paul Multi Club, with her prepared speech, ‘Wanna Play?’ and impromptu on the delights of ‘Snow’ placed second.

Also competing in the Junior division wee Bryan Tetlock of Elk Point Multi Club, Lennox St. Arnault, Boscombe Multi Club, Hudson Brousseau, Elk Point Beef Club and Claire Elson, St. Lina Multi Club,

Sierra Smith of the Elk Point Multi Club took the win in the Intermediate group, with her speech, ‘The Impact Cows Have on Global Warming’ and an impromptu answering the question, ‘How Did Junk Food Get Its Name?’ Second place went to St. Paul Multi Club’s Kurt Yaremko and ‘The Local Food Movement’, followed by an impromptu, ‘Being Young is Overrated’.

Other Intermediate speakers were Ava Mallette of Boscombe Multi Club, Hailey Danyluk of Elk Point Beef Club and Kali Janz of Goodridge Beef Club.

Goodridge member Naya Janz topped the Senior age group with ‘Are You Offended Yet’ and an impromptu on ’Time – Use or Abuse’, Rhiana Champagne of St. Paul Multi Club placing second with her thoughts on ‘Humanity’ and an impromptu on ‘Moving Away From Home’.

Other senior speakers were Miley Michaud of Boscombe Multi Club and Tyson Kotowich, Elk Point Beef Club.

First place winners from the St. Paul District Communications are qualified to compete at the North East Zone Communications Competition in Lac La Biche on March 23, hosted by the Lac La Biche and Wood Buffalo districts. If any of the winners were unable to attend, the second place speaker would qualify to compete instead.

Elk Point 4-H alumni Shaylyn Klatt was mistress of ceremonies for the event, where speakers were judged by Ruth Purdy. Kim Reed, Vicki Brooker, Dan Brundidge, Brooke Sallstrom, Leon Ward, Cheryl Collins, Ross Kreboski and Ashley Bristow. Timers were Ron Wirsta and Jessica Murray, while Denise Jacques and Tammy Klatt served as tellers.
