ST. PAUL – The St. Paul Bengals’ 44-0 victory against the Cold Lake Ravens on Oct. 26 was a major win for the bantam football team.
Derrick Wygle, running back for the Bengals, said the win means the Bengals are back at the championship stage of the Wheatland Bantam Football League (WBFL) on Nov. 2.
“We’re confident,” said Wygle. He said the team has played amazing throughout the season with everyone doing their job.
“For the most part, we’re a well put together team.”
But with the Nov. 2 game being the championship game for the WBFL, and also the qualifier for the bantam provincials, Wygle said the Bengals have to bring their “A-game.”
Asked if he thinks the Bengals will win the league, Wygle did not respond, but smiled and nodded his head.
He thanked all the supporters who came out and asked the community to once again bring their energy to the championship match – which will be played at home at the St. Paul Regional High School.
Derek Zapisocki, head coach for the Bengals, said the team has worked hard all season, and has overcome challenge after challenge.
The coach is confident heading into Saturday's game. “We got all the confidence in the world that they can do it again."
The Bengals have won the 2007, 2010, 2017, 2022, and 2023 WBFL championships. If the team wins this week, it will be the team's third league championship in a row.
But they are facing a tough game. The Bengals will be playing the Wainwright Warhawks for the league title.
The Bengals lost to the Warhawks during the season opener, but managed to beat them at a later game. This weekend's clash will decide which team comes out on top this season - and who will represent northern Alberta at bantam provincials.
